As specialized machines go, a harvester is pretty darn cool.
Designed to harvest wheat, grain, corn these machines are robust highly efficient vehicles that see extreme usage during harvest season. They can harvest up to 30 acres an hour in wheat: in high-yielding corn up to 7,200 bushels (253,721 liters) per hour. That means you can fill up 7 semi-trailers every hour.
One of the key features of these harvesters is their long hydraulically controlled harvester head which is designed to be in either a locked or floating position. Critical to operation of these booms is that they travel to a locked position so that crops are sprayed into whatever vehicle will hold them.. To provide closed loop feedback on the mechanical locking mechanism, a limit switch is typically used which is activated when the boom reaches its locked position. The problem however, is that these switches must be deployed in an area completely exposed to outdoor conditions on the boom including sprayed compounds, dust, sand, water and hot metal. Conditions like this, on industrial outdoor equipment under challenging environmental conditions are what we are made for.
